200th Anniversary of the 1811-1812 New Madrid Earthquakes - Second Major Earthquake
On January 23, 1812 an earthquake of magnitude in the mid-7s occurred at 9:15 am in the New Madrid, Missouri area. This earthquake was slightly less than the Dec 16th earthquake that was located on the southernmost fault and was 5 weeks previous. The January earthquake is believed to be associated with the northern most of the 3 New Madrid faults and would have caused nearly as extensive damage as the December 16th event. This second major earthquake was followed by a week of aftershocks of 1 in the 6s, 11 in the 5s and 78 in the 4s.

ISGS-Led Consortium Begins Injection of CO2 for
storage at the Illinois Basin - Decatur Project
The Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC) has begun
injecting carbon dioxide (CO2) for the first million-tonne
demonstration of carbon sequestration in the U.S. The CO2 will
be stored permanently in the Mt. Simon Sandstone more than a mile beneath
the Illinois surface at Decatur. The MGSC is led by the Illinois State
Geological Survey (ISGS), part of the Prairie Research Institute at the
University of Illinois.

ISGS Annual Oil and Gas Report
The 149-page ISGS Annual Oil and Gas Report for 2009 has been published to the Web. The report of petroleum statistics by Bryan G. Huff is an annual report of drilling, oil production, discoveries, and development in Illinois oil fields. It includes numbers of wells drilled and plugged in each oil field, pay zone descriptions and discoveries, oil field structures and annual and cumulative oil production, and historical field information.
